BIO

Ever since I can remember, I have had a camera in my hand. What started as photographing landscapes and sunsets, capturing the contrast and shadows they cast, has led me to pursue a career in photography. After graduating from Colorado College in 2006 with a BA in Hispanic Studies, I followed my heart and traveled to Tanzania to volunteer at a day care and an orphanage. Throughout my three months as a volunteer I realized the amazing access I had with the villagers I was living with and captured their lives with my camera. I was granted access into someone’s life that a regular tourist would not experience. Upon returning from Tanzania, I decided to take my love of photography and study what was once just a hobby. In the summer of 2007, I enrolled as a Summer Resident at the Maine Media Workshops, immersing myself in a 12-week intensive course. I had the opportunity to study under renowned photographers Alison Shaw, Bob Krist, Bob Sacha, Jay Dickman, John Isaac and Joyce Tenneson. Having assisted many photographers in their studios or on location, my latest achievement was assisting my mentor John Isaac on two photographic workshops to Kashmir and Rajasthan India in October 2008, resulting in an exhibit at the Maine Media Workshops Gallery at Union Hall in August 2009 and private exhibit at Ouisie's Table in Houston, Texas in the spring of 2010. Currently, I live in San Francisco and am available for freelance work, private digital photography lessons and workshops. Please contact me at: emma@emmasimmons.com
